The Strategy Toolbox - How to pick the right tool at the right time

Strategy is all about achieving the desired business outcomes. Traditionally, it has involved planning; studying the situation, setting a goal, and devising a step-by-step way to get there. Over the years, this has been the main method used for business strategy both in the boardroom and the classroom. However, this approach is not always suitable. Planning long-term strategies, for example, may not be suitable for a software firm that is subject to fast-changing products and competitors. Nor would it be suitable for entrepreneurs introducing a new product or business model. So, what are the other options? How do we know which approach is best in each situation?

These are the key questions that our partners Jari H. Helenius and Evan Balzer analyze in the April issue of HKH On Strategy, and it shows that getting the answer right can make a significant difference.
